Unwanted Family Secrets Unveiled

**A Family Truth Best Left Untold**

Oliver was heading home early. His university lectures had been unexpectedly canceled on Friday, and he fancied surprising his parents a day ahead of schedule. They weren’t expecting him till Saturday. He grinned, picturing his mum’s face when she flung open the door, gasped dramatically, and dragged him straight to the kitchen to stuff him full of Victoria sponge.

He knocked—silence. Odd. Mum was usually home by now. Fumbling for his keys, he didn’t even get a chance to use them before the door swung open. There stood his mother, flustered, hastily tying her dressing gown shut.

“Oliver?! Why are you here today?” Her voice wobbled.
“Wanted to surprise you,” he said, stepping inside—then froze.

A stranger emerged from the kitchen. Mid-forties, tousled hair, shirt buttoned wonky, and—suspiciously—no toolbox in sight. Not the neighbour, not a family friend, not Uncle Geoff. Just… a random bloke.

“This is… Mr. Harrison,” Mum blurted. “He’s here to fix the tap. It’s been leaking all morning, can you believe it?”

“Mr. Harrison,” Oliver said flatly, “do you always fix taps in a shirt and no tools?”

The man mumbled something about being late and bolted.

Once the door clicked shut, Oliver turned to his mum.
“Care to explain?”

She stared at the floor, silent. Anger bubbled in his chest, his mind racing with ugly possibilities.

“Mum… are you cheating on Dad?”

“It’s not that simple—” she began, but he cut her off.
“Seems pretty simple to me! You’re betraying him!”

“Don’t you dare speak to me like that!” she snapped.
“Oh, and will you say the same to Dad when I tell him?”

She sank onto the hallway bench like the words had physically crushed her. “Don’t… Oliver, please… don’t tear us apart.”

“*Me* tear us apart? *You* did that! Dad worships you, and this is how you repay him?”

“Where *is* he, your father? Always at work! I might as well be a prisoner in this house—”

“You could’ve got a job, joined a gym, taken a course! Sitting around was *your* choice. Don’t pin this on him.”

“You don’t understand… I haven’t felt loved in years. We’re strangers now.”

“Then get a divorce! Or are you scared of losing the house?”

“How *dare* you!” She shot up. “I’ve worked just as hard as him! Raising you, ferrying you to football, keeping this place running! And I *do* love him… It was a mistake, a moment of weakness…”

Oliver grabbed his jacket, too furious to listen.
“Where are you going?” his mum cried.
“Out. I can’t be near you right now.”

“Just… don’t tell your father. It’ll never happen again. I swear…”

He left without a word. For hours, he wandered the streets, nursing a lukewarm tea in a café, twisting the truth over in his mind. He’d been certain—he’d tell Dad everything. But doubt crept in.

That evening, he found her in the kitchen.
“I’ll keep quiet. For now. But if I *ever* catch you with that man again—I’m telling him.”

“Understood. Thank you…”

The weekend passed in suffocating tension. Dad was clueless; Oliver could barely look at Mum. He visited less often. The trust was gone.

Weeks later, Oliver forgot his gym kit at his parents’. Popping back to fetch it, he spotted *him* outside the flat. Mr. Harrison. Any hope that it had ended vanished.

“He was here,” he hissed at his mother.
“We only talked—”
“So you broke your promise.”

The next day, Oliver went to his dad’s office.
“Dad… we need to talk. It’s awful, but I can’t stay silent. Mum’s having an affair.”

William’s face paled. “You’re sure?”
“Saw him twice. I should’ve told you sooner. I’m sorry.”

His dad stood by the window, silent for ages. That evening, he packed a bag and left. Mum sobbed, begged for forgiveness. He didn’t look back.

He rented a flat and drowned himself in pints. Mum withered, barely leaving the house, sinking deeper each day.

Oliver knew he’d done the right thing. The truth had to come out. But guilt gnawed at him. Maybe ignorance was bliss? If a lie kept them happy, was it worth ripping it all apart?

The questions haunted him for a long, long time…
